Know Your Target Market

One of the keys of successful online marketing is knowing your target market. In respect to search engine optimization and keyword research, you need to know what drives people to search for certain terms, what they are looking for, and whether they find it on your website.
For example, say your business offers paper cutters for sale online. The first thing you want to do is research what keyword phrases your potential customers may search for when they are looking for paper cutters online. How many people search for just plain "paper cutters," and how many people search for something more specific, such as rotary trimmers or paper stack cutters?
You also have to consider the demographics of the people who use these keywords. For instance, someone who is looking for a paper cutter that will cost them a lot of money, such as an electric paper cutter or an industrial paper cutter, is probably not shopping for something for home use — they probably have a small business or a home-based business. Likewise, in most cases someone who wants your typical inexpensive guillotine cutter or rotary trimmer is probably just looking for something to have at home.
Once you have worked these things out, you need to make sure your site meets the needs of each type of customer. Don’t be afraid to focus more heavily on one type of customer — for instance, small business owners. That kind of specialization can really help your business, because it enables you to become better known among your target market.
