Researching Your Beliefs

researchI recently watched a documentary about ignorance and stupidity. It’s all about the idea that many of us choose to be ignorant about things even though we live in a time when so much information is available to us. This movie really got me thinking about the importance of researching your own beliefs to make sure that they are accurate.

So often we take what others say at face value and then repeat it without finding out if it’s true. Your buddy says that medical insurance in Florida is great for the elderly. Later you hear yourself telling someone that Florida Medicare is really great. They’ll pass that on to someone else and so on. If you haven’t checked your facts then you shouldn’t be sharing this information. It may be true that medicare in Florida is terrific but if you’re not sure of it then what are you doing telling people about it?

The point is just that we should stop to question what we believe. I don’t mean at some deep level (although that’s important too). I mean that we should check our basic facts when we’re telling them to others or making decisions based on them. It’s easy to do that research today so we should take advantage of that ease.
