Make Your Parents Keep Their Life Insurance Even If You Have to Pay for It!

Ugh. I can’t believe how stupid I was in my 20’s. Yet another reason why having older-than-normal parents kicked me in the behind. Both of my parents were in their sixties by the time I was married at 23, and both parents decided it was unnecessary any longer to maintain their life insurance. I never thought twice about it.
Well, now I am! Those policies would have paid off tremendously if only they’d been maintained (they weren’t term life insurance, I don’t believe). I understand that they were retiring and figuring out how to live on a fixed income, but why didn’t I have enough foresight to just make the payments myself? They would have been dirt cheap, though I admit in my 20’s I didn’t exactly have any extra money. When I think now, in my 40’s and paying two college tuitions and daycare, how I could have used the money I would have gotten when they died! Especially now that my own personal annuities are tanking, and they boys’ college money in their 529’s is worth so little. I sure wish they at least had had the foresight that I did not back then. My financial straits would be much less dire.
