Turn off your hearing aid, Grandma

Last summer my Grandmother of nearly 80 years came to stay for a few months. Because I had not seen her for at least 20 years, having her in the house on a daily basis was a real treat for me. One new addition to her life since the last time I’d spent time around her was the use of a hearing aid.
At times, it was almost comical the way Grandma went about her day. She would often times struggle with hearing people that were standing right in front of her. And she was almost always wearing the darned aid.
What was worse for pretty much everyone except Grandma were the times she had something mis-adjusted and the hearing aid would emit a high toned squeal. It really blew my mind that she could have the thing in her ear, and not even hear the noise that it would make.
What ended up being even funnier (to me at least) were the times I would walk by her door on my way to the bathroom and could hear the device emitting its baleful tones at 3 a.m. I know for a fact that she never wore them to bed, so they had to be sitting in their storage container on her nightstand just shrieking away all night long.
