Optimizing for Multiple Keywords

Use multiple keywords to increase your likelihood of reaching your target market.

Use multiple keywords to increase your likelihood of reaching your target market.

In most cases, when you are doing keyword research you are going to find that you have a long list of keywords to choose from.  So how do you optimize your site for all of the pertinent keywords, to ensure that you capture as many search engine searches as possible?

Well, once you have identified your primary keywords — that is, the most important keyword searches to focus on getting — you can assign the leftovers to other pages, such as informational articles on your website.  These articles are great because they get potential customers onto your website, using information they actually do want or need as bait.  Plus, it’s a great way to use up those extra keywords you’d like to get some traffic out of!

For instance, if you provide divorce mediation in Phoenix, you will probably design your homepage around strong keywords, such as “divorce mediation” and “Arizona mediation.”  But what to do with other keyword phrases your customers might search for, such as “divorce in Scottsdale“?

These types of keywords can easily be worked into the focus of informational articles designed to capture keyword searches.  For instance, you could write an article on why divorce mediation saves both parties money, another on how to get an affordable divorce in Scottsdale, perhaps another on suggestions for negotiation techniques for divorce do-it-yourselfers.

The key is not trying to hit all your keyword phrases in one page, but focusing each page on just a couple of keywords.  This way you hit all the pertinent keywords, without watering down the relevance of any one page.
