How to Decorate a Teenagers Room

Decorating a teenage boy’s room is actually much simpler than it seems. The most important thing is to pick a theme, and this is easy to do. All you have to do is focus on the things that he likes best - sports, music, video games - and take it from there.

We recently re-decorated our 14 year old’s room. His bedroom still featured the lime green colors and softer prints of his childhood years. A dramatic makeover was needed.

First, we painted the walls a dark blue. All furniture pieces including the bed, study table and chair were in white, so they wouldn’t clash with the walls. My son is a motocross racing fan, and we painted wall murals on one side with the motocross theme. Finally, we completed the décor with motocross bedding. An easy chair in the corner, a study table with a computer, and the bedroom was complete.

You can use this as an outline for any boy’s room, replacing the custom bedding and murals with his choice. For instance, if the skateboard is his best friend, add skate board accents in the form of skateboard bedding, posters, pictures, murals etc.

Of course, we involved our son in almost every stage of the re decorating process so there wouldn’t be any looks of horror later!
