The Meaning of Heart Tattoos and Other Designs

For the most part, there is always a broad or general meaning for a tattoo, although most wearers attach their own personal meaning as well. While most agree that heart tattoos speak of love or adoration, there are many individuals who have a heart tattoo to remind them of their victory surviving a heart transplant. Adding other features to the heart tattoo such as flames can mean passion while a dagger can mean a love scorned. The meaning of a tattoo can change over time as well, particularly when speaking of skull tattoos. Whereas skulls were once a symbol of intimidation, they are now also used to convey humor.
Some tattoos have specific meanings based on their archaic origins, such as tribal tattoos originating from Japanese or Maori traditions. Tattoos of dragons in tribal tradition can mean fertility or heavenly powers while sun tattoos symbolize eternal life. Many choose tribal tattoos for their captivating lines and swirls that can represent a wide variety of elements. Though they can sometimes tend to be quite masculine, it is not uncommon to find tribal designs on women as well. The arms, shoulders and back are the most common placement for these types of tattoos.
