Many people don’t realize that getting an online degree isn’t just about studying and doing assignments, but also about having the proper technology.

Online education not only uses technology, but is also impossible without it.  Here are three things you need to have in order to get your online college degree:

1. A computer.  This might seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people think they can get by using a public computer!  While going to the library or even a friend’s house to use a computer might work as a backup plan, the odds are against you ever completing your online degree if you don’t have your own computer.  Not only are you bound to your library’s or your friends’ hours, but you are also often unable to download or upload files when you are using a public computer — which makes doing assignments very difficult, to say the least!
2. An Internet connection.  In order for that computer to be of any use to you, it also needs to have a way to connect to the Internet.  While this isn’t usually necessary for traditional courses, the Internet is how you access your classes in an online degree program.  Take note, though: Many online colleges require high-speed Internet (DSL or broadband), so dial-up may not work…  And even if it is allowed, who wants to use an Internet connection that slow?
3. A software suite that includes a word processor and an email client.  While the latter is not a necessity, the former almost certainly is.  Most likely, the documents exchanged between you, your teacher, and other students will need to be in Microsoft Word format.  An email client is also helpful, since you can get your emails that way without having to remember to go the webmail page and manually check for new email.

There are many online degrees available for students who have these things, so if you’re looking for an education, invest in a good computer, fast Internet connection, and the proper software for getting the coursework done!
